Is AET the Same as PTLLS? Key Differences Explained

PTLLS was once a common starting point for new teachers and trainers. Today, Level 3 AET has taken its place as the newer introductory route. But is AET the same as PTLLS? Not exactly. Both cover similar teaching and training basics but they are not identical qualifications. Their titles, structures and current status are different. Older PTLLS awards can still matter for some jobs and sectors, so existing certificates should not be ignored. Some employers and regulated sectors still accept PTLLS as an equivalent teaching award. However, new learners would normally choose Level 3 AET today.

So, what really changed and does an old PTLLS still count? Let’s look at how AET and PTLLS compare and what each qualification means today.

What Are AET and PTLLS?

AET and PTLLS are both introductory teaching qualifications. However, they belong to different stages of the UK training system. Understanding each one first makes the comparison easier.

AET

AET is the shortened name for the Award in Education and Training. Level 3 AET is designed for people starting to teach or train adults. It introduces the practical basics of working with learners in a safe and supportive way.

The course looks at teaching responsibilities, learner needs, assessment and useful feedback. It also explores how to plan and deliver learning fairly. You do not always need a teaching job before starting, so it can suit new trainers and career changers.

PTLLS

PTLLS means Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It was created as an introductory route for people working with adult learners. These learners could be in colleges, workplaces, community settings or private training.

The award introduced new teachers to their role in the learning process. It covered areas such as planning, teaching methods, assessment and professional responsibilities. In simple terms, PTLLS helped people build the basic teaching knowledge needed before moving further into education or training.

Is AET the Same as PTLLS?

No. AET and PTLLS are not exactly the same qualification. However, they have a closely related purpose. Level 3 AET came after the older PTLLS route and both cover basic teaching and training knowledge. Their official titles, structures and current status are different.

One important detail is that PTLLS was not always a single Level 3 award. Some awarding bodies also offered PTLLS at Level 4. Pearson describes its Level 3 AET as the direct replacement for its earlier PTLLS awards at Levels 3 and 4.

So, AET and PTLLS are closely linked but they are not identical awards. Their purpose is similar, while their titles, levels and qualification structures differ. This distinction matters when an employer asks for a specific award or qualification level.

What Replaced PTLLS and Why Did the Qualification Change?

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) replaced the older introductory PTLLS route. The move to the newer Education and Training awards began in 2013. Pearson opened registrations for its Level 3 AET from September that year.

However, PTLLS did not disappear everywhere at once. Withdrawal dates differed between awarding bodies. For example, OCR continued accepting registrations for some Level 3 and Level 4 PTLLS awards until 29 February 2016. So, 2013 marks the start of the newer system, not one final end date for every PTLLS award.

The wider reform aimed to make teaching qualifications simpler and more flexible. Further education covers colleges, workplaces and community learning. These settings involve different teaching roles, so a more flexible structure made sense.

So why does PTLLS still appear today? The name became widely recognised across further education and training. Employers and course providers can still use PTLLS as familiar legacy wording, even though newer Education and Training awards now sit within the current structure.

PTLLS vs AET: What’s the Difference in Practice?

In practice, the main difference between PTLLS and AET is their current status and qualification structure. PTLLS belongs to the older system, while Level 3 AET is the current introductory award. How a course is delivered does not define the difference. Both can use classroom, online or blended learning.

Point PTLLS Level 3 AET
Full title Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Level 3 Award in Education and Training
Position today Legacy award route Current introductory award
Award level PTLLS existed in different forms and levels Level 3
Main purpose Basic teaching preparation Introduction to education and training
Core areas Teaching roles, delivery and assessment Similar teaching and assessment areas
New learners Older route A current introductory route
Existing certificates Can still matter for some rules Current award evidence
Employer wording Still appears in older adverts Current award title

Both routes cover similar teaching foundations. These include teaching roles, learner needs, delivery and assessment. Current AET awards follow newer rules from awarding bodies. Older PTLLS awards belong to the previous qualification structure.

The exact title and level of an old PTLLS certificate also matter. PTLLS was not always a Level 3 award. Some versions were offered at Level 4. So, a Level 4 PTLLS award is not the same award as today’s Level 3 AET.

Course delivery can also cause confusion. PTLLS was not simply a classroom-only course and AET is not automatically online. AET did not replace PTLLS because learning moved online. Providers can change how they deliver a course but that is separate from the qualification change.

Are AET and PTLLS Equivalent for Employers?

AET and PTLLS can be treated as equivalent in some jobs but not in every case. Employer requirements can differ by role and sector. So, whether one award is accepted in place of the other depends on the specific requirement.

A useful example comes from SIA licence-linked training. The SIA accepts the Level 3 Award in Education and Training for trainers. It also lists PTLLS among accepted equivalent teaching or training awards. This shows that older PTLLS awards can still meet some current sector rules.

However, one sector example does not set a rule for every UK job. If an advert mentions PTLLS, check the wording carefully. Ask the employer if it is unclear whether AET is accepted instead. Some employers can still use PTLLS as familiar wording for an older route.

Employers can also ask for more than a teaching award. A role can require recent industry experience, subject knowledge or other sector qualifications. For that reason, read the full job requirements before deciding whether your award is suitable.

Is an Old PTLLS Qualification Still Recognised?

Yes, an old PTLLS qualification can still be recognised. The certificate remains evidence of the award you completed. However, whether it meets a current requirement depends on the employer, job or regulated sector.

Keep these points separate:

  • Existing certificate: It still shows the award you completed.
  • Current employer: Check whether your exact PTLLS award meets the job requirement.
  • Regulated sector: Follow the current trainer rules for that sector.
  • Older award: Its age alone does not make the certificate worthless.
  • Long career break: Updated CPD can still matter after time away from teaching.

So, is PTLLS still valid? An old certificate still records your achievement. However, course withdrawal and current acceptance are different issues. Current SIA rules also show that PTLLS can still meet some regulated training requirements.

If an employer questions your PTLLS, show the exact certificate details. The awarding body, award title and level can help explain what you completed. Do not rename it as AET unless AET appears on the certificate.

How Can You Check an AET or PTLLS Course Before Paying?

Before paying for an AET or PTLLS course, check the exact qualification you will receive. Words such as PTLLS, accredited or recognised are not enough on their own. The award title, awarding body, qualification number and assessment rules give a clearer picture.

Check these points first:

  • Award title: Confirm the exact title that will appear on your certificate.
  • Qualification number: Use it to identify the regulated award.
  • Awarding body: Check which organisation issues the certificate.
  • Official register: Use the correct qualification register for your UK nation.
  • Assessment: Check whether written, practical or observed work is required.
  • Provider approval: Confirm the provider can deliver the stated award.

GOV.UK provides a regulated qualification search for England and Northern Ireland. It also points learners towards the systems used in Wales and Scotland. So, be careful with broad claims about UK-wide regulation.

A provider using the word PTLLS is not automatically offering a fake course. The older term can still appear because people recognise it. What matters is the qualification you will actually receive. Check the award title, qualification number and awarding body before paying.

What Does the Current Level 3 AET Actually Cover?

The current Level 3 AET introduces the main skills and knowledge used in teaching and training. It covers teaching roles, learner support, planning, delivery, assessment and feedback. However, the exact units and assessment methods can vary between awarding bodies.

Common learning areas include:

  • Roles and responsibilities in education and training
  • Relationships and professional boundaries
  • Inclusive teaching approaches
  • Planning and delivery
  • Assessment principles
  • Constructive learner feedback

City & Guilds lists 12 credits and 120 total qualification hours for its Level 3 AET. Its public page gives 48 to 61 guided learning hours. Pearson also lists 12 credits and 120 total qualification hours, with 48 guided learning hours.

Assessment can also vary. City & Guilds Unit 302 requires observed teaching and one hour of micro-teaching involvement. At least 15 minutes must be observed. Learners already teaching can use actual classroom practice instead.

Pearson also uses micro-teaching within its standard AET route. Some Learning and Development units can use work-based evidence instead. So, the practical assessment is not identical across every Level 3 AET route.

The Level 3 AET also has clear limits. It is an introduction to teaching, not a full FE teaching qualification. It does not prove subject expertise either. For full FE teacher training in England, the main recognised route starts at Level 5. One key award is the Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills).

Did the FE Teaching Changes Replace Level 3 AET?

No. The newer FE initial teacher education changes in England did not replace Level 3 AET. The new rules apply from the 2026 to 2027 academic year but they focus on specified FE teacher training courses at Level 5 and above. Level 3 AET is not covered by those new requirements.

The Department for Education guidance makes this distinction clear. It states that the new requirements do not apply to Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications. AET and CET are given as examples. So, the changes affect higher-level FE teacher training rather than the introductory Level 3 AET route.

This distinction matters because new FE teaching rules can easily cause confusion. Someone might assume that all existing teaching qualifications have changed or been replaced. That is not the case with Level 3 AET. It remains available as an introductory education and training award, while the newer rules apply to specified higher-level FE teacher training courses.

Do You Need AET If You Already Have PTLLS?

No, you do not automatically need AET if you already hold PTLLS. The right choice depends on your job, sector, current knowledge and career plans. If your existing PTLLS already meets the requirement, repeating similar entry-level study could add little value.

Use this simple check:

  • Employer accepts PTLLS: You may not need to repeat similar study.
  • Employer asks for AET: Check whether your PTLLS is accepted instead.
  • Sector has separate rules: Review those rules before booking another course.
  • Knowledge needs updating: Relevant CPD could be more useful.
  • You want progression: A higher teaching qualification may make more sense.

One point is important here. Holding a certificate is not the same as having up-to-date professional skills. Someone can have a genuine PTLLS award and still need fresh knowledge. In the same way, a new AET certificate does not replace subject knowledge or recent industry experience.

If your PTLLS already meets the role, think about what you actually need to improve. Updated safeguarding, assessment, digital teaching or subject CPD could add more value. For a fuller FE teaching career, a higher-level route may be the better next step.

So, Is AET the Same as PTLLS When It Comes to Teaching?

For anyone still confused about “Is AET the same as PTLLS?”, the important point is how the qualification applies to you. The two names are closely connected but you should not treat them as interchangeable in every situation. What matters most is the qualification you hold and what your employer or sector requires.

If you are new to teaching or training, focus on a current Level 3 AET that fits your goal. Already have PTLLS? Check whether it meets the requirement before studying again. That way, you can make your next move based on what you actually need rather than the name of the qualification.
